Wat mij zo opvalt, is dat veel rechts georiënteerde economie deskundigen (en daar zijn er veel van) de stappen van Trump steeds zo interpreteren als zijnde een slimme strategie, waarbij ze zelf enorme strategieën bedenken om de acties van Trump heen.
Nu zou ik dat accepteren als Trump daadwerkelijk een gepubliceerd beleid had waarin die slimme strategie staat beschreven. Ik zou het zelfs nog wel akkoord vinden als Trump er af en toe iets over zou zeggen… Maar niets van dat alles. Trump heeft daar nooit iets over gezegd of geschreven. Ze schrijven het uit zichzelf aan Trump toe en doen daarmee aan ‘Smarting up Trump’.
Trump is niet zo slim als die economen wiens werk het is om slimme economische theorieën te bedenken.
Ze maken hem dus slimmer dan hij is, namelijk net zo slim als ze zelf zijn.
Trump zelf ondertussen doet niets anders dan hij al sinds de jaren tachtig doet. Het zijn steeds dezelfde tactieken, dezelfde standaard aanpak. Daar zit geen verdere diepe strategie achter. Dat is hem zo geleerd en hij is er goed in. Dat werkt zo in de high end bouwwereld.
Maar president van de VS zijn is anders dan CEO zijn.
Als je er nu eens van uit gaat dat Trump al 50 jaar doet wat hij doet. We zagen ook in zijn eerste vier jaar nergens een briljante onderliggende strategie die er uit naar voren kwam. Hij kreeg toen simpelweg vrijwel niets voor elkaar.
Als Trump nu eens niet zo briljant is, dan zijn de huidige stappen gewoon Trump.
Zou hij nu briljant zijn, dan zou er ineens een wonder gebeurd moeten zijn, want nu zijn hersens pudding aan het worden zijn zou hij ineens briljant worden? Dacht het toch niet!
Trump is de Amerikaanse economie om zeep aan het brengen. Gewoon omdat hij dealtjes wil maken als een New Yorkse vastgoed magnaat. Zo werken internationale verdragen en de internationale economie niet.
Daarom gaat dit volkomen mis, wat die wel slimme economen ook zeggen.

Smarting up Trump
What strikes me is that many right-leaning economic experts (and there are a lot of them) always interpret Trump’s actions as part of a clever strategy, coming up with elaborate theories to justify his moves.
I could accept that if Trump had an actual published policy outlining such a smart strategy. I might even go along with it if he occasionally spoke about it… But none of that is the case. Trump has never said or written anything about it. These economists ascribe it to him on their own and engage in what I call “Smarting up Trump.”
Trump is not as smart as those economists whose job it is to develop sophisticated economic theories.
They are making him appear smarter than he actually is—essentially as smart as they themselves are.
Meanwhile, Trump is simply doing what he has been doing since the 1980s. The same tactics, the same standard approach. There is no deeper strategy behind it. This is what he was taught, and he’s good at it. That’s how it works in the high-end real estate world.
But being the President of the United States is different from being a CEO.
If you assume that Trump has been doing the same thing for 50 years, then you have to acknowledge that during his first four years in office, we never saw a brilliant underlying strategy emerge. He simply didn’t accomplish much at all.
If Trump weren’t a genius then, why would he suddenly be one now? For a miracle to have occurred, it would mean that as his brain turns to mush, he somehow becomes brilliant? I don’t think so!
Trump is wrecking the American economy, simply because he wants to make deals like a New York real estate mogul. But that’s not how international treaties and the global economy work.
That’s why this is going completely off the rails—no matter what those actually smart economists say.
